UCSF Department of Surgery
October 7, 2022

Association of Out Surgeons and AlliesThe UCSF Department of Surgery has partnered with The Association of Out Surgeons and Allies (AOSA) as the inaugural institutional supporter/member of AOSA. The AOSA is a newly formed organization of LGBTQ+ Surgeons and allies that promote acceptance, inclusion, and equity in the surgical specialties to further learner engagement, support individual clinicians and researchers, and build a community.

At UCSF Surgery, we have worked together to make diversity, equity, and inclusion a priority, expanding our Department through recruitment in many areas, including faculty, staff, and learners, and by being an institutional supporter for those affinity groups that have such a membership category, including the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), the Latino Surgical Society (LSS), and The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS). We celebrate all diversity and want to support affinity groups and all members of our community as best we can.

This partnership with The AOSA is essential because they’re also working to create a space for LGBTQ+ surgeons and trainees that promotes a dignified and successful surgical career without stigma, judgment, or discrimination. With this partnership, we will continue our work through a combination of outreach, education, mentorship, and professional development.
