A gift to the Dept of Surgery
helps us discover new
treatments and cures.

Dr. Alfred de Lorimier, a pioneer in pediatric surgery and the founder of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at UCSF, has passed away.
The UCSF Department of Surgery is comprised of approximately 86 full-time clinical faculty and 18 full-time research faculty. Many are pre-eminent nationally and internationally, and have served as officers of major surgical societies, specialty boards and NIH study sections. Faculty are recruited based on their clinical strengths, research potential, teaching interest and aptitude. Faculty development is a high priority for the Department.
Basic and clinical research by faculty and residents is fundamental to our mission. NIH funding of departmental research has increased for most of the past decade garnering the second highest level of NIH funding among all departments of surgery nationwide. Funding from extramural sources (federal, industry, foundations, and gifts) has grown steadily. We are optimistic that we will increase our research footprint despite external constraints that limit reimbursement for surgical services.
