Shareef Syed, MBChB, MRCS Syed is a general surgeon specializing in abdominal transplantation. Dr. Syed is Associate Director of the UCSF Surgical Skills Center and Director of Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program.

After completing his medical degree at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, Dr. Syed completed 3 years of medical and surgical residency in the National Health Service. During this period, he qualified for and was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons, UK.  

Dr. Syed completed his general surgery residency at Central Michigan University (junior years) and University of California San Francisco (senior years) where he graduated.  He then completed his American Society of Transplant Surgeons accredited abdominal transplant fellowship at UCSF.  His specialized training included the performance of adult and pediatric kidney and liver and transplantation, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, and hepatobiliary and dialysis access procedures.  He holds membership in numerous professional organizations including: American Society of Transplant Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, American Society of transplantation and The Americas Hepato-Pancreato-biliary Association.  

Dr. Syed's research is focused on outcomes of liver and kidney transplant patients with special emphasis on hepatocellular carcinoma. He is currently studying the impact of long waitlist times and local regional therapies on liver transplant outcomes for patients with liver cancer. He is also investigating novel noninvasive tests to detect kidney rejection.

Dr. Syed also dedicated to the education and mentorship of medical students, general surgery residents and abdominal transplant fellows.
