What a Gift Means to the Department of Surgery

There is a tremendous opportunity for you to make a significant difference today by supporting the Department of Surgery. Our mission is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research.

Leading Center of Excellence

The University of California, San Francisco is renowned as one of this country’s premier academic medical centers offering state-of-the-art surgical care while leading the way in research and education.  The Department includes a distinguished group of clinical and research faculty. Thanks to them, the Program enjoys an outstanding reputation in clinical care, research and education.

The Department is a world leader in surgery and an international leader in Global Health and outreach. UCSF also  serves as a major clinical referral center, attracting surgical patients from around the world, and treating some of the most complex and difficult cases. Because UCSF is a premier biomedical research center, the translation of their new findings to patient care and teaching is rapid and direct.

Education and Training that Prepares the Doctors of the Future

Participants in UCSF’s highly competitive surgical residency training program rotate through six different hospitals, treating and caring for patients from San Francisco and beyond.  Almost half of all UCSF-trained surgeons pursue careers in academic surgery, choosing to become educators in the field themselves.  The Program plays a key role in shaping the career of many future surgeons and it is imperative that UCSF be at the forefront of surgical education.

Strong Leadership

The UCSF Department of Surgery is also an international leader in medical education, with researchers sharing their findings with other institutions across the country and around the world through peer-reviewed publications. Your support of the UCSF Department of Surgery at UCSF is an investment in a better future, providing our physician-scientists with the opportunity to pursue their research efforts and transcend their abilities in patient care.

Many Ways to Contribute

  • Major Gifts

Major gifts, often in the form of a Distinguished Professorship or Endowed Chair, provide funding in perpetuity and creates an enduring, highly visible link between the donor or honoree for whom the endowment is named and the continuing achievements of the program that the endowment supports.  Many donors choose to establish an endowment to benefit an area of personal or intellectual interest and then share in the pleasures of the program’s successes.
  • Distinguished Professorships and Endowments

Distinguished Professorships and Endowments will the Department to grow and enrich the program in many ways. These gifts allow deans and directors to enhance existing programs by creating fellowships and lectureships. They also support promising new programs that might otherwise go unfunded.

Additionally,  Distinguished Professorships and Endowments are powerful recruiting tools for attracting and retaining the most talented and sought after health scientists and teachers. With such first-rate faculty come the brightest graduate students, the most accomplished colleagues and the public and private support that contribute to an intellectually challenging environment. Naming opportunities are often available with endowments.
  • Unrestricted Gifts

Other gifts include unrestricted funds to support Department priorities such as faculty initiatives, research efforts and capital project, just to name a few.

Contact Us

Thank you for your interest. For more information, please contact our Director of Development, Regan Botsford or call (415) 502-1573. As Development Director for the Department of Surgery, Regan works with our friends and supporters to encourage philanthropic giving to our programs. Historically, private philanthropy has played a crucial role in the advancement of teaching, education and research. This trend is all the more important today with cutbacks in NIH funding for research.

With the financial support of those whose lives have been touched by our faculty and staff, the UCSF Department of Surgery will continue to make pioneering discoveries that improve the lives of patients.
